Florida Power Outage

Everybody around me was abuzz today with the news. It seems most of my state, Florida, was out of power. Our power at work didn't go out. After lunch, I got a CNN alert email and a moment later, my boss asked the lady sitting behind me if she'd heard anything on her radio about it. Then we clicked over to CNN. I was surprised that the outage was so widespread, that Washington DC was reportedly concerned about it, that they'd ruled out terrorist's as the cause. They ruled out terrorists??? Doesn't that imply that they thought it possible terrorists did this? I guess I've started feeling safe again, about 7 years after 9-11. Perhaps I shouldn't get so complacent... On a completely different note, I'm watching American Idol. If you didn't already know, I'm hopelessly addicted to it. From the beginning, I liked Michael Carrico, and Carly. For the past couple weeks, I also like Jason Castro, too. At first, I couldn't get into Robbie, but tonight he reminds me of Bo Bice and I adore Bo Bice. So far tonight, however, no one's blown me away. Not even close. However, I do like the personalities a lot this year so far. I think it's going to be a good year. I hope someone will be as fun as Sanjaya and Blake, and so far, I've not seen that. Hopefully they'll start to feel more comfortable and let loose.

Okay, I'd rather have ice than lose of power. I hope things continue to be 'powerful' for you there in FL.

Yeah...saw that on the morning news!

As for Idol...don't watch it, except I'll sometimes watch the finale. And loved Sanjaya...I'd tune in once in a while just to see his hair!

Oops, forgot...remember the 'She bangs' guy?

Regarding the power outage, I was so busy last night and this morning I didn’t watch the news to find out the cause. My hubby thinks he heard that a transformer went down (not sure why) that triggered a domino effect. My editor will be happy to know I took my pad and pen with me and wrote a short story for Scarlett, although she won’t be as happy to know I didn’t get to my edit as my laptop won’t hold a charge for even 40 minutes – a new laptop battery is on the top of my to buy list – well, after the activation for my hearing implant (if the surgery’s approved), my 3 prescription meds, my plane ticket to Cincinnati so I can see dad, my 30th reunion, and Lori Foster’s writers’/readers’ event. Dang! I hope my royalties are good this month so I can make a dent in all that. The kids are dying to go to the Ren Faire, too, and it’s almost over. We usually drop $250 at that, soooooooooo. I will also have a raise from the day job, but not that good a raise…

I got hooked on Idol when I was home from the day job for a month recovering from surgery. I mainly tuned in so I’d know what everyone at work was talking about around the lunch table. So I missed the she-bang guy except I’ve seen an old clip. Now I’m hooked and the lunch crowd’s pretty much lost interest in AI. I loved Sanjaya and his wild hair. I hope someone this year will be as much fun.

I've been really disappointed in Idol this year. Everyone just seems rather cardboard-y.

Have fun with the kids! I'm so jealous...I love ren faires and I've heard the ones in Florida are great. :)

About the knee-jerk it-must-be-terrorists reaction to the power outage. It is really sad that the US population has been so frightened by terrorism, mostly by the emphasis their own leaders have put on it. "Be afraid - be very afraid (and vote for me because I'll keep the bogeymen away)"

Terrorism by definition strives to achieve a political end by scaring people into acquiescence. The only way to counter it is not by intrusive government or throwing your legal safeguards away but by being resilient and standing up for what you believe in. Sure fight back where you can, arrest the bastards and bring them to court (not Guantanamo). But don't be so scared of the creeps that you can't live normally.

I was in Northern Island for 2 years when things were bad, and UK and Europe in general have more than their share of crazies. You survive by not giving into fear.

Enough seriousness! I've just signed contracts for 4 books - 3 are re-releases and one is new. Whoopee!

What's a Ren Faire?

Woo hoo, Eric!

Congrats Eric! You're advice about terrorists sounds sane. Day to day, I don't see the general populace thinking about it. It hadn't crossed my mind until I read it in the CNN article.

To everyone else - my coworker told me that the cause of the power outage was a fire at Turkey Point (a nuclear power plant). The fire set off alarms and tripped circuits and the plant went offline. Supposedly it takes several hours to bring it back online. Obviously, my town isn't powered by that particular nuclear facility. I'm not sure which one powers us. Years ago, when I worked for Wackenhut, I was a backup guard for Turkey Point. I never got as far as going there, but I took the training just in case...

Molly - I love the Ren Faire and my kids really do. But it's not cheap - even if you just pay admission and get a little something to eat - much less buy souvenirs and outfits for the kids - which I don't do a lot of.

A "Ren Faire" is short for Renaissance Faire or festival. All the entertainers and vendors, and a lot of the attendees, dress up as if they were in the 16th century. Like Robin Hood, Maid Marion, fairies, elves, knights, bawdy wash women. There are mud fights, jousts, life-size chess games, royal feasts, and food from that time period - turkey legs, meat pies... And lots of clothing, jewelry, elf ears, crystals, swords and shield and other weapons, dragons, musical instruments, games, even archery. etc.
