How long does it take to write a book?

How long does it take to write a book?

Someone recently told me they thought it took a year or even two to write a 60,000 to 120,000 word book.

When I'm in normal writing mode, I write about 2,000 words daily so that's 60,000 words in a month.  That doesn't count weeks like this one where I'm down with the flu, but a normal week -- for me.

I work full time outside the home, thus perhaps I could write faster if I wrote full time.

I asked this question on Facebook and I got different answers. Most of the answers mirrored my own, however, some writers write slower. Some have young children at home which of course comes before writing. My family is grown now but I remember the days.

As fast as I've been writing recently, I see other authors who put out double and triple the number of books I do, so some are faster. I see posts on Facebook all the time that a writer has written 5,000 or even 10,000 words in one day. I've done that too, just not with consistency. Ten thousand words wipes me out.

So what about you (if you're a writer). How fast do you write?

Happy Thursday!

Ashley

I have a full-time job that allows me to write (some) whenever I have slow moments at work. I'm an administrative assistant at a local college. However, I try to get as much writing done as I can usually on the weekends. My days are not consistent but I'd have to say that my usual goal is to write at least a chapter a week (or more). From the time I start writing a new book until I finish it, I'd say it takes a good 6 months, maybe a little longer. (I write full length, 20+ chapters, over 100,000 word novels.)

I'm not able to write at work even if we're slow. Wish I could.
