Saturday Snippets: Dancing

Today's Saturday Snippets feature dancing.

I love to dance. When I was a teen I lived at the disco. If my hubby (then boyfriend) wanted to see me, he had to come to the disco with me. Otherwise I went with my friends anyway.

Lately I've been taking line dancing lessons and going to the local line dance country-western bar. Although the dress and music is a little different, it's a lot of fun just like disco. Instead of wearing short skirts and fashion boots or clogs I wear boots and blue jeans to dance.

Here's a romantic dancing excerpt for your reading pleasure today. It's from my sweet romance novel "So You Want To Marry Our Mom".

ISBN-13: 978-1-60272-778-6 (Paperback)
ISBN-13: 978-1-60272-709-0 (Electronic)

When erotic romance writer Jackie Duarte’s kids nominate her to be a television bachelorette on Perfect Mate and help to pick her next husband and their new father, her life becomes crazier than it’s already been. Now the whole world will meet her bratty ADHD/ODD twelve-year-old, perhaps learn of the penname she has fought so long to keep under wraps, and see her house on television...and she’s no Martha Stewart.

Worse yet, the ghost of her husband has long been talking off her ear but now he’s also giving her dating advice, telling her how to flirt and whom to marry. She has to be extra careful not to speak to him aloud while the cameras are rolling or risk being put into a straightjacket.

But worst of all, Doug Applebaum, her best friend and the younger man she had wanted to marry but gave up on, finally decides he loves her, after she’s legally committed to wed one of the bachelors on her show. What can Jackie do now? Go back on her committment to the show, ignore the advice of her children and her deceased husband, or follow her heart straight into Doug’s waiting arms?

Genres: Romance / Contemporary Romance / Paranormal Romance

Excerpt: So You Want To Marry Our Mom

Randall took her into his arms and swayed back and forth. Then he spun her around. “May I say you’re extraordinarily lovely under the moonlight?”

She glowed, daresay brighter than the Northern Star twinkling overhead. Her head swelled with so many compliments she just might float to the moon. “You’re very handsome yourself.” Recalling Vance’s advice, she added, “Randall.”

The handsome bearded man smiled into her eyes, as if trying to hypnotize her.

But she had to comment. “I don’t hear any music.”

Randall looked surprised and hurt. “You don’t? I hear music whenever I’m with you.”

So You Want To Marry Our Mom is available at Amber Quill Press.

Character Interview: Kacey Carlisle from new book "Crazy In Love"

Kacey Carlisle, the heroine from my erotic paranormal romance releasing today, has kindly agreed to an interview with me to tell readers a little about her romance.

Help me to welcome Kacey and be sure to ask her questions.

Ashley: Kacey, welcome! As you know my blog is titled "Happily Ever After" which is because that's what I write.

Kacey: Thanks, Ashley. I've never been interviewed before and I don't know much about this blogging stuff.

Ashley: (gasp) You don't blog? I thought everybody blogged in 2010. So what do you do with your time?

Kacey: I've been busy doing my family genealogy. A distant cousin sent medical records to me about our great-great-grandfather, from right after the Civil War. It has personal interviews with my great-great-grandmother, his doctors, his friends, his neighbors, his employers... It's such a great find, better than a treasure chest full of rare gems.

Ashley: Wow! I've dabbled in genealogy but haven't done much of it in a couple years. I hit a dead end when my ancestors got on the ship in Germany, back in the 1800's.

Kacey: I'm available for hire. I LOVE to do genealogy. Except when insane ghos... Oops! I didn't mean to say that. I don't want to give anything away.

Ashley: Let's change the subject then. I usually don't think of romances being about married people, unless of course, it's about an arranged marriage. Was yours an arranged marriage?

Kacey: This is 2010 in the US. Who has arranged marriages? No, I met my husband in college. I was getting my history degree and he was in law school. He couldn't keep his hands off me.

Ashley: Go on. My readers and I love to hear sexy stuff.

Kacey: But you said no spoilers. You don't want me to give away your book, do you?

Ashley: Shoot! I guess they'll just have to read your story to get the good stuff. So, tell me, what's your favorite vegetable?

Kacey: Zucchini. Big fat ones, though. Not like that skinny little one in your "Tease" story on your blog today.

Ashley: I don't believe you said that.

Kacey: But you're an erotic romance writer? You put me in your erotic romance. What's your favorite vegetable?

Ashley: Who's the interviewer and who's the interviewee? Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to say that out loud. I guess Italian green beans or corn on the cob. What's your favorite paranormal type character? Ghosts?

Kacey: Ghosts! How could you ask me that! I'd rather face a real-life vampire. You know how crazy those ghos...

Ashley: No more ghost questions. Promise. So, are you a Coke or Pepsi person?

Kacey: I'm trying to cut back on soda and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Flavored water.

Ashley: Romance, mystery, or suspense?

Kacey: History. Genealogy.

Ashley: You don't like my romances? I write sweet and erotic.

Kacey: I love your romances, Ash. Especially mine and Heath's. Did I tell everyone how awesome it is?

Ashley: You're so sweet. Thanks. So what else do you do besides genealogy and history?

Kacey: I love drive-in movies.

Ashley: Me, too! When I'm not reading I love the big screen. Hopefully "Crazy In Love" will make it to the big screen soon.

Kacey: But the crazy ghos...

Ashley: Well, it was great chatting with you. Do you have a website? Can people hire you to help them with their genealogy? What's your url?

Kacey: My ur-what? No, I don't have a website. I'm not that into computers.

Ashley: Maybe you'll change your mind once you become a celebrity. I hope we'll get to talk again, after "Crazy In Love"'s been out awhile.

Kacey: I'd be delighted. Thank you, Ashley! You're the greatest.

Ashley: Back at you. You've been a great ghost...I mean guest.

If you want to check out Kacey and Heath's romance, "Crazy In Love" visit TEB. It released today, Monday March 22nd. After this interview and all the promotion I've been doing for this book and that of my alter ego's that comes out Wednesday, I barely remember my name.

Excerpt from "Crazy In Love":

A mixture of awe, disbelief, enlightenment, and grief washing over her, Kacey Carlisle poured over her great-great-grandmother’s pension claim records. The ancient handwriting was almost illegible in places yet it was clear—her grandfather, August, hadn’t left his wife and family as the descendants had believed all these years. Her grandmother, Emma, had kicked him out.

Emma had sworn under deposition she’d feared for her life after August had returned home from the Civil War, physically and mentally ill. Other acquaintances had also testified under oath that August had suffered from crazy spells, that he’d thought spirits were chasing him. Others claimed August believed Emma to have been unfaithful. For sure, he’d been a tortured soul.

Kacey’s head spun so she took another sip of her soda as she tried to make sense of her readings. Clearly, there were two sides. Still, she sympathised with Emma. Her own husband, Heath, while not insane or abusive, had been ignoring her for a long time and so her thoughts had turned more and more to divorce. It broke her heart, but she could no longer deny it. Heath had fallen out of love with her. If she paraded naked before him, he’d only tell her to quit acting silly and stop blocking the TV.

Oh, yeah. She empathised with her ancestor. Men could be real shits. Who needed them?

Her heart cracked a little more. Who was she fooling? She still loved her husband, desperately, madly. Insanely. At least, they didn’t have kids who would get hurt.

Miffed at herself, she chewed her lower lip. So it would seem she was insane, too. Who would hang on when the situation was so hopeless?

Only a crazy person. Maybe she’d inherited Grandpa August’s crazy streak.

”It’s late. Come to bed,” Heath muttered on a growl. Barefoot, he padded through the hall and scowled at her. He scrubbed the heel of his hand over the beginnings of new stubble on his chin. “I’ll lose my job if you keep me awake all night. I won’t be able to function at work tomorrow.”

Crazy In Love is now available at Total-E-Bound.

Saturday Snippets: Unusual Professions

Today's Saturday Snippets deal with unusual professions.

I looked through my books and pondered which of my characters have unusual professions: the topless waittress (Naked Ambition), queen of a cartoon world (Make-Believe Lover), professional blogger (Liquid Heat), or the newly turned vampire who fancies himself a super hero (Truth, Justice and the Vampire Way), etc. I decided to feature Felicia in "Wishcraft". She's a nice witch who makes love potions for people. They don't always work the way they're supposed to, especially when the ghosts of her great aunt and grandfather dabble in her potions. But they come up with interesting results that creates some confusion and even some fun - just like falling in love the usual way.

by Ashley Ladd

Felicia likes to dabble in love potions, but when she brews one for her old enemy Acacia, it goes awry when Acacia’s intended, Jeremy Knowles, falls for Felicia.

Jeremy pursues Felicia and although she fears it’s only spell-induced, Felicia can’t resist his charms. She only hopes that she won’t be forced to turn Acacia into a toad to keep the secret so that Jeremy won’t find out, before she can confess her sins.

Drawing together her brows, Felicia checked her mental agenda as she gave her potion one last stir, and then went to see who was brave enough to venture here without an invitation. No one was scheduled, and her clients were well schooled to ring before venturing here. No one visited the Heks’ house unless they were an out-of-town salesman or a lost traveller who hadn’t been spoon fed the gruesome, if made up, stories about human sacrifices and demonic rituals.

“Felicia, open up! I hear you scuttling around in there,” Acacia Pangbourn’s voice shrilled through the house just before the floorboards creaked suspiciously.

Mere seconds later, the door slammed testifying to an illegal entry.

Blimey! Acacia was one of Felicia’s ex-classmates, a ghastly creature who’d made her secondary school years a constant misery. Not only had she made goo goo eyes at every man in whom Felicia had shown an interest, she’d committed the unforgivable crime of trying to steal Jeremy. The other woman had never known how close she had come to being turned into a chalkboard eraser.

To her dismay, Felicia discovered the woman was already through the front door and well into the house before she could catch her. Swearing under her breath, she followed the whispery sound of her nemesis’ footsteps on the throw rugs.

After her father had expunged Jeremy’s memories of their beautiful night together and had made Felicia swear never to date another Naggie, not even to talk to another one, the embers of the dead flame had blazed to life. Of course, she had done a little fanning. Okay, more than a little.

No matter what her father had decreed, no matter how much she respected her pop, she couldn’t live her life without Jeremy. She’d had to face the facts—she was a Jeremy addict. He had been as heroin in her blood. His presence intoxicated her and she savoured every memory of their cherished night.

And so, unable to live without him, she’d won back his love.

One summery night after they had graduated, they slow danced under the moonlight, wrapped in each other’s arms. Lost in love, teetering on the precipice of ecstasy just holding one another, they’d gazed into each other’s eyes.

“You’re a vision,” he’d murmured against her lips, his breath minty and highly stimulating.

With a halo of moonlight making his dark hair gleam, he was the vision. As if struck by lightning, she’d sucked in a ragged breath and huskily murmured, “So are you.” Then, with her heart hammering with such force she feared it would spill from her chest, she’d stood on tiptoe and pressed her mouth to his.

Without hesitation, he’d accepted her gift, drawing her up to him. Plundering each other’s lips, they’d let their tongues finish the tango. Fevered, she’d moulded herself against him, noting how perfectly they fit. Only a brief twinge of guilt had crept in to dim her bliss. How could a magical person, or “Maggie,” as they called themselves, fit so well with a Naggie? According to her father, this was impossible—and more than distasteful.

She’d found it anything but distasteful. Jeremy was the most luscious man she’d ever met, his touch the only one that had ever made her senses whirl.

“I only feel alive when I’m with you. All I ever want to be is with you.” It had taken a lot of courage for her to admit this to herself, much less to him. Her father would have disowned her. Her family would have mourned the unholy association. They’d sooner have seen her copulate with a demon.

“I can’t believe what a lucky bloke I am, to have such a beautiful woman in love with me.” He’d stroked her hair away from her flushed cheeks and then nibbled on her ear. His hands had roamed her back and settled on her bottom before he pulled her hips tight against his.

Only later in retrospect had she noted that he hadn’t declared undying love for her. Wryly, her lips twisted. Had it all been one-sided? Oh, sure, he’d been consumed with lust. But love? If it had been love, would any spell have vanquished it?

She didn’t know, but she shook her head.

Now, as then, Jeremy wouldn’t go away. Rather, the memory of him refused to leave her in peace.

Ghost

We're watching Ghost with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Isn't it about the most romantic movie of all times?

I'm a sucker for romance. Of course, I'm sure my friends, family, and readers had no clue whatsoever.

I'm a real pushover when the romance is combined with action/adventure and/or comedy. This movie has it all.

I keep trying to write romances that are so poignant and beautiful.

Now the song Unchained Melody is playing. This song always melts my heart. Does it yours? It's one of my favorite songs of all time. I always liked it, but combined with this movie and the romance, it just seems so ultra romantic.

Moving along to other things, my mother in law's in town. At one time, that would have scared me to death. It still makes me a little nervous. There was a time she was hell on wheels. She's mellowed a lot. I always promised I'd be a nice mother in law and then my daughter in law was something else, too. But we've finally meshed. However, my daughter-in-law and my mother-in-law can't stand each other. Aren't families fun??? Tomorrow night, we're ALL going to have dinner together, all 12 of us. Well, if Keith can't get off work, then only 11 of us. He's going to try.

My younger daughter signed up for her 2008-2009 school schedule. She'll be a high school senior. She was upset that she couldn't get many electives and not the ones she wanted. For some reason, they wouldn't put her in any art classes for the past 3 years and she loves art. She can only get into beginners' art classes now as all the others have prerequisites. She's learned a lot from her older sister the artist, so she feels she's beyond that, so she's mad. She did sign up for a web design class which sounds pretty nifty. I wish we'd had web design when I was in school. I'd love to take one now.

Guest Blogger: Author Christiane France

Please welcome my friend and fellow anthology partner, Christiane France. I hope you'll ask her a lot of questions and check out all her books. Be sure to enter her contest.

1) Please tell us how you came to move from England to Canada. Please tell us if there’s a big difference in the two countries and what they are.

When my husband was demobilized from the Royal Air Force, work was hard to find in the UK. Our chances seemed better in Canada, so dh got a job here and we came over. We lived first in the Ottawa Valley, the small town of Renfrew, but once his contract was finished, we went to Montreal and lived there for ten years. Then, a work-related issue brought us to Hamilton in the Niagara Escarpment where we're only 40 miles from Niagara Falls and the US border and Buffalo.

There are, of course, many differences between the UK and Canada, but we've been here so long now, I don't think about them much any more. One thing I do recall is that I hated Canadian chips--I thought they tasted like salted paper, because, for those who're familiar with Miss Vicky's chips, that's how they were in England. Also, fruit and veggies in North America (and that's both Canada and the US) do not have the depth of flavor of their English counterparts. It apparently has something to do with dampness over there.

2) What is your normal day like? Do you have a writing routine?

Now that I'm officially retired, my days are anything but routine. I envy people who do so many pages or hours of writing per day, but that's not me. I have to make myself write and that's not always easy. So, I get up when I feel like it, have breakfast, play with my 2 kitties, check my e-mail, and then I do a little housework, or I go shopping, or some days, if I'm on a deadline, I go straight to writing. And then there are those days when I just hang out.

3) What do you do to relax when you’re not writing?

Read, knit, shop, watch TV.

4) Which do you prefer to write? Mysteries or erotic romance?

I really prefer to write mysteries, but there's not much market for them at the moment, unless you're with a NY publisher and your books are in the bookstores, so I'm happy thinking up romantic entanglements for all my imaginary characters.

5) What are you working on now?

My next erotic romance is due out in February - Double Delicious is a menage story about an out-of-work radio host and announcer who meets her two very hunky and handsome neighbors, can't figure out which one she likes best, and then, joy of joys, discovers she can have them both.

March will see the release of Sabotage - another erotic romance, but this time the setting in WWII England and the main characters are an MI5 agent and an Italian prisoner of war.

I then have five more erotic romances contracted for this year--one will be a regular contemporary romance and the other four will be gay m/m. The one I'm working on right now, involves a a gay man twisting between some very conflicting emotions--guilt for starting an argument which he feels contributed to his partner's accidental death, self-directed anger for giving in to instant attraction and not realizing the man was playing him, and fear at the thought of moving on with his life in case he repeats his mistakes.

6) Do you have any tips for new writers?

Yes! Competition is fierce, but you need more than a well-written, exciting story to achieve your dreams of publication. You need to put a smile on the acquiring editor's face and to do that, I suggest you use your spell check--and if you use M/S WORD pay attention to any green underlining which identified grammatical problems; do your research--do not assume because you don't know something the reader won't either; try to learn the difference between "telling" and "showing"; watch out for too many passive sentences, e.g. "He/She was walking/driving/running etc." or "They were..."--too many passive sentences slows the story down to a crawl. And finally, before you submit your story to a publisher, go through the manuscript very carefully, figure out how many times you used the word "that" and take out at least half of them.

7) What are your goals for the future?

To win the lottery. Make the NY Times best seller list. I don't know, I just try to take each day as it comes and be grateful for what I have--a wonderful husband, a good life, two wonderful kitties aka The Boys, and a total of 18 published works.

Inseparable
by Christiane France
ISBN-13: 978-1-60272-134-0 (Electronic)

When Alison Palmer flees to England to escape the financial mess left by her late, philandering husband, she is, to use her own words, plain flat on her ass. With no money and no job training of any kind her future looks pretty grim—until she gets a job house-sitting Foxton Hall and meets handsome Nick Berringford and his deceased, identical twin brother, Nathan.

Nick and Nathan’s parents once owned the Hall, and the twins were planning to buy it back. But before that could happen, Nathan was involved in a freak accident and died. Now, rumor has it Nathan’s ghost not only haunts the bedroom where he died, but the ghost is gaining a reputation for making love to any woman who happens to sleep there.

At first, Ali thinks she’s having sexy dreams about the live twin, Nick, until Nathan introduces himself, and Ali realizes she’s as much in love both the ghost and his twin, and the trio are quickly caught up in a ménage a trois.

Nick knows Nathan’s spirit is trapped in the Hall and that’s why he’s also never left the village—he won’t desert his brother. They are, in fact, inseparable. But what will happen if Nick’s bid to buy back the Hall is successful? Will Nathan’s unfinished business cause him to disappear out of their lives for good?
