Too Many Books?

I just came home from Walmart where my kids dragged me. To kill time while they shopped I looked at books.

Although I'm in the middle of three other books I always want more. At this time of year the holiday themed books particularly attract me.

But there were so many romance novels begging to be bought. I couldn't make up my mind which one - or two - to take home.

I examined covers. I read blurbs. I looked for my favorite authors. I even opened one book and read a page.

Still, I couldn't choose one over another.

One was by one of my favorite authors. It had a time travel theme which I love. I was leaning toward it. Then I flipped to a random page to sample it. Unfortunately, the page was all show not tell so I was scared to buy the book.

None of the other books were by my auto buy authors although several of the blurbs looked enticing.

In the end, my kids tracked me down before I decided so I decided not to buy any of them.

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by such a large selection of books you didn't buy any? Or did you do just the opposite and buy a lot? My bank account is on the short side till payday or maybe I would have bought three or four.

What entices you to buy a book? How do you decide between them? Do you go with what feels right at the moment? Or do you also go with your auto buy authors? Or the first one that has an intriguing blurb? Or a tweet on Twitter? An excerpt on a blog? A beautiful cover? Or word of mouth? I'm sure Twilight and New Moon are flying off the shelves this week.

It was rather interesting for me to read the article. Thanx for it. I like such themes and anything that is connected to them. I would like to read a bit more soon.

The bigger selection of books, the more I usually buy... until I run out of funds. Then the ones I can't afford go on my wish list. I usually go straight to my fav authors. If they don't have something, I look at authors I've heard of often but haven't tried yet. If none of those appeal (which rarely happens), I start checking out covers and titles.

It never fails, does it? Money to buy means nothing catches your fancy. No money, and you want everything in sight!

When the rare occurrance of both funds and desire to buy meet, I usually go with the ones on the list the longest. In the case of the TBB list, I'll pick the one which inspires the most interest. If both are equal, then a quick 'eenie meenie miney moe'...

Which one or two? You mean which five, right?
Luckily I've been buying secondhand books for years (though the author doesn't' get a commission, so some say that's a really bad thing).
The bookshop, Charlie Burn's, has an outside hall where every book is one euro, and the newer books inside are very cheap as well.
So I'm very lucky. I hardly ever have to choose! I just take them all.

A cover attracts my attention first and then the blurb. Some authors I'll buy even if they happen to have a shitty cover because I know what I'm getting between the covers. Big bookstores get me in trouble every time. We don't have a B&N in town...thank GOD or I'd be in big trouble but if I'm out of town I always find one and spend waaaaay too much. Old favorite authors and brand new ones, doesn't matter. I'm buying.

One of my 'finds' was Devil Wears Prada, back in 2004 during a 4-hour layover in Detroit. I couldn't buy the three I wanted, so I took a chance and was thrilled when the movie came out!
