Dog Days of Summer

by P.J. Fiala

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Owning Rolling Thunder Motorcycles, Inc. and raising his twin sons was top priority in Dog’s life. That was until he met Jocelyn James, the sweet, loving, single mother of Gunnar, a young man who works for Dog.
Joci raised Gunnar alone all of his life after her cheating, dickhead of a boyfriend ran off with another woman. She finished school, started her own graphic design business and hung out with friends and family. The last thing on her mind was men! That is until she met Dog.
The chemistry is undeniable. The passion is incredible. The family bond is like no other.
Excerpt:
Chapter 1
There were times like this when Joci wanted to burst out laughing it felt so good. The wind in her face, running through her hair, the sun warming her skin, the roar all around her, seven hundred-plus pounds of pure unadulterated power between her legs, and she was controlling it all. Gliding through traffic with her son, Gunnar, just a few yards in front of her, feeling all the love and joy God made for her, just her. Yes, these were the times Joci enjoyed. She smiled as they came up behind a car and floated over to the left lane to pass. As she watched, Gunnar glided easily past the car, his dark hair pulled into a low ponytail, the two little kids in the back seat watching him and smiling at each other. You could tell they were thinking, Someday, I’m going to do that. Then as she pulled up alongside to pass them, they started smiling and pointing at her, one of them turning to the adult in the front seat and saying something causing the driver to look over at her as she passed him. He smiled at her, and Joci smiled back at the reaction; it happened often. She could almost hear the kids in the back: Look dad, a girl on a motorcycle.
She easily pulled in front of the car and continued on down the highway to their destination. She loved this life, this group of people that she had, at least, this in common with. A few minutes later, Gunnar and Joci put their turn signals on to turn off the highway, onto a frontage road, and into the parking lot of Rolling Thunder Motorcycles. They navigated the last few shoppers straggling out at the end of the day.
Gunnar worked at Rolling Thunder Motorcycles as a mechanic for the past year. He loved working here. He loved the people he worked with, he loved the customers and their bikes, he loved building bikes, and lately Dog had let him help in the design on some of the custom bikes they were known for. And well-known they were becoming. Dog built some of the hottest bikes around. He had recently been in Rider magazine, and showcased on several “biker” shows. His reputation for building beautiful, custom, mechanically sound bikes was becoming legend.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I was born in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri named Bridgeton. During my time in Missouri, I explored the Ozarks, swam in the Mississippi River, and played kickball and endless games of hide and seek with the neighborhood kids. Spending summers in Kentucky with my grandmother, Ruth, are the fondest childhood memories for me.
At the age of thirteen, my family moved to Wisconsin to learn to farm. Yes, learn to farm! That was interesting. Taking city kids and throwing them on a farm with twenty-eight cows purchased from the humane society because they had been abused was interesting. I learned to milk cows, the ins and outs of breeding and feeding schedules, the never ending haying in the summer, and trying to stay warm in the winter. Our first winter in Wisconsin we had thirty-six inches of snow in one storm and were snowed in our house for three days! Needless to say, I wasn’t loving Wisconsin.
I am now married with four children and two grandchildren and a new one on the way this summer. I have learned to love Wisconsin, though I still hate snow. Wisconsin and the United States are beautiful, and my husband and I travel around by motorcycle seeing new sites and meeting new people. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are interested in where we are going and what we have seen along the way. At every gas station, restaurant, and hotel, we have people come up to us and ask us about what we are doing as well as offer advice on which roads in the area are better than others.
I come from a family of veterans. My grandfather, father, brother, two of my sons, and one daughter-in-law are all veterans. Needless to say, I am proud. Proud to be an American and proud of the service my amazing family has given.
Interview with PJ:
1) Is there a story behind this book or any of the characters you'd like to share with us?
The main story is trust and loyalty.  Joci has major trust issues.  She’s been cheated on twice in the past and it’s just so hard for her to let go and trust Jeremiah.  Jeremiah was raised to be loyal and honorable.  He is a veteran and takes his responsibilities very seriously.  It’s hard on him that Joci doesn’t trust him right away.  He’s never had to deal with someone not trusting him.  He is loyal to the sister of a friend, which is where most of Jeremiah and Joci’s issues lie.
2) What was the inspiration for this book?
The simple answer is Bikers.  My husband and I are bikers and so are most of our friends.  My family are all veterans.  We have two sons and a daughter-in-law who are also veterans.  They are all the inspiration behind the story.  Not every biker is a 1%er and not every veteran has problems.  I wanted to portray them all in the best possible light.
3) If you used a real setting, how intimate are you with it? Have you been there just to visit or have you lived there? Or did you do a lot of research about it?
I live in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The story takes place here in Green Bay, though, some of the places in the story are fictional, like The Barn.  While it isn’t uncommon for people to convert barns into bars in this area, the one in the book is fictional.  The Veterans Ride in the book is an actual ride we go one every year.  The route and the scenery are all from that ride.
4) Did you fall in love with you hero(es)? Why?
I absolutely did.  Jeremiah is a dream.  Every woman would want to be with a man like him.  He’s hot, for starters.  He’s loyal, honorable, smart, financially independent, a great father, the sex is panty-melting hot, he knows what he wants and he will be patient and work towards getting it.  What’s not to love?
5) How long did it take to write this book and how long before you found a publisher?
I wrote this book in about a month.  Once I started writing, it just flowed.  It went through several rounds of beta readers and has changed quite a bit from the first draft, but that’s good.  I found a publisher through a friend.  My friend and my publisher take their dogs to the same groomer.  They were talking one day and the rest, as they say, is history.
6) What was the toughest part about writing this book? Did any characters misbehave and if so, how?
LuAnn was hard for me to write.  She is modeled after a real person, and I have to say, I don’t like this person.  So, when it came to her antics and shenanigans, I had a hard time and would have to walk away for a bit.  LuAnn is delusional in that she believes she and Jeremiah will get married some day.  When Joci comes on the scene, LuAnn isn’t happy.  But, she’s also extremely immature and goes about things in a very immature, nasty way.  It’s hard writing about a character like her.  BUT, the final book in this series will be LuAnn’s book, so I’m going to need to get my act together for that one.
7) If this book became a movie, who would you cast to play the parts?
Hmmm, Chris Hemsworth is who I imagined Jeremiah looking like.  A younger Meg Ryan is who I thought Joci looked like.  LuAnn looks like a trashy Paris Hilton.  Wow, this could be fun.
8) What do you like to do when you need a break from writing?
As I mentioned, my husband and I ride motorcycle, so when the weather is nice, we ride.  I also read a lot of books, it’s how I learn.  And, playing with the grandkids is fun.  They are so sweet and a pleasure to enjoy.
9) Where do you usually write? Do you write in silence or with music or other background sounds?
I write in my office at home.  I always have music or the TV playing in the background.  I like the noise.
10) Tell us a little more about what makes you tick.
I love to laugh and I am very fortunate in that my husband is very funny.  His sense of humor is amazing and everyday he has me laughing.  I love music, Kid Rock, Bon Jovi, Ozzie Osbourne, ACDC, Aerosmith, and so many more.  I love traveling on the bikes and seeing new places and doing new things.  Seeing the world on a motorcycle is the best.  You smell the different smells, you are in the elements, rain, wind, sun.
11) Is this book part of a series and if so, tell us about the series please.
Yes, Dog Days of Summer is the first in a series.  Jeremiah (Dog) Sheppard owns a motorcycle shop.  His twin sons and Joci’s son work for Jeremiah.  The next book is Rydin the Storm Out, Ryder’s story (one of the twins).  The third book is Gunnin for You, Gunnar’s story.  After that, I am thinking of a novella for one of the other characters, Connor, who is key to the story of Jeremiah and Joci, but Dog Days doesn’t revolve around him.  JT, the other twin, will need his story told and finally, LuAnn.
Thank you for reading this and reading Dog Days of Summer.  Time is precious and I appreciate yours.
