Should celebrities lives be private?

DD#2 asked with disgust just the other day why it's anyone's business what goes on in celebrities personal lives. Specifically, we were in the grocery check out line and she saw one of those scandal magazines that was judging how stars looked in swim suits. They'd rated Brittany Spears as a "winner" and Kirsty Alley as being a "loser", etc. I don't care if Pamela Anderson goes topless. While I agree with DD#2 about that, I'm not so sure I agree to the same level of privacy when it comes to our political candidates. It's not that I want to embarrass their families or care about how they look in a swim suit or what religion they practice. But if they cheat on their wives, if they're caught lying, if they're caught doing something criminal, I think we need to know. I don't want to vote someone into office that we can't trust. I'm not political and I don't typically get into politics. But this article about Senator John Edwards caught my attention. I feel terrible for his wife and his family. Elizabeth Edwards seems to be a wonderful person. She doesn't deserve this. Neither do their children. Personally, I don't trust the man. He not only lied once but repeatedly. My mother suffered with cancer for years. She eventually died from it. She also suffered from infidelity. Both affect the entire family. I wasn't unscathed. I empathize with Mrs. Edwards and her family. I can't imagine how much worse it must be to go through all this under public scrutiny. One of the reasons I use a pseudonym is to protect my privacy and that of my family. I may never become famous, but just in case, I adopted it. I can't begin to imagine the Paparazzi following me around, trying to dig up dirt and invading my privacy. It's incomprehensible. You'll want to see what Amarinda Jones, Anika Hamilton, Anny Cook, Barbara Huffert, Brynn Paulin, Bronwyn Green, Dakota Rebel, Kelly Kirch, Molly Daniels, and Sandra Cox are up to, so make sure to visit them also. :)

I don't think a politician's infidelities effect the type of job he or she will do in office. I'm not sure there would be any left if being faithful was a criteria. BUT, I find it totally disgusting and for Edwards to be carrying on while his wife is fighting for her life, is completely, totally inexcusable. And I'm really sorry your own family had to go through that.

I'm with Ashley on this one. Celebrities in Hollywood are only responsible for entertaining us. Their personal problems and sexual exploits don't effect my movie. Politicians though, represent us to the world as a credible force. It goes to personal representation as well as strength of character in the global perspective. If you can't trust your politician in one are, who's to say you can trust them elsewhere?

Nah. I don't want a cheater in office. I don't care which party he is.

What really disgust me is that today, the mistress's 'friend' went on the news and claims it's still going on! Why prolong the story? It's out; we know about it; why does she want her 15 minutes of 'fame'? Yes, the man sunk to the pond scum level by doing this to his wife during her illness, but why why why keep the story going? Give the family some room to breathe; to heal from this disclosure.

I'm not interested in what celebrities do. I do not understand the fascination on who marries who or sleeps with who...whatever...but in saying that someone who runs for office on a 'family values' platform and then is screwing around should expect that that will come out and that there is no way you can put a positive spin on that. The man is a wanker..and that's being polite

Yep. If someone is running for Prez and espousing family values while cheating on not only his wife and family, he's a scumbag who doesn't deserve the public trust. This is too important. I've heard a lot of people (mainly men) say SO WHAT. Hmm. Bad answer.
