Happy Boxing Day

Isn't this the day, the day after Christmas, that the British call "Boxing Day"? The news in America, at least in Florida, is calling this the "second Black Friday". I just did a little research and it seems that originally, December 26th was "St. Stephen's Day". St. Stephen was the first Christian martyr and he was stoned to death in Jerusalem around A.D. 34-35. I didn't realize I'd named my youngest child after a Saint. Today is also the anniversary of when my oldest son and daughter-in-law told us we'd be grandparents for the first time - 10 years ago. That was a happy shock as I was 39 and never imagined I'd become a grandma so young. I always thought "Boxing Day" was a day to celebrate Christmas with friends. Wikipedia says, however, it's a day for the wealthy to give gifts to the lower class, for bosses to give gifts to employees. (Somehow, I don't picture my boss showing up at my door with a gift.) Wikipedia also says that many countries in the Commonwealth get an official holiday for Boxing Day. Sadly, we in America do not. However, who am I to complain? This year, we get two four-day weekends back to back. Hubby got Christmas Eve and Christmas off but he had to work today. I prefer my 4-day weekend even if I plan to write for my other job all weekend. Okay, I will do some shopping today - but mainly because DD#2 still has Christmas gifts to buy for friends she'll see at a Christmas party tomorrow night. And she wants to exchange the Samurai game her dad gave her for something she likes. I'll hop down to check out the Steinmarts sales while she goes to Gamestop. I get so very bored in Gamestop but the kids love it.
