Is Blogging Safe?

I was just at The Bumbles blog reading a post about privacy online. How much transparency should we have? Should we be concerned that one of our followers will turn into a cyber bully, indeed a stalker? As always, the Bumbles hosted quite a lively discussion so you may want to pop over there and get their take on the topic.

As a published author who wants to connect with my readers, it's a difficult line I walk. I feel like I'm doing a fancy routine on a balance beam or worse, walking a tight rope. I want to share interesting tidbits about me, the person behind the stories, so I can make a personal connection to readers.

I've also made blogging friends from blogs I visit and from bloggers who visit me. Most are fellow writers with whom I have a lot in common. Others are readers or moms like myself. We talk shop. We talk about our families, how they affect our writing, how our writing affects them, and how our writing mixes with the rest of our daily lives. A few times I've forgotten other people are privy to the conversation because they lurk. They read the posts, perhaps read the comments, but don't leave comments of their own. I know because I check my daily stats and many more people visit than leave comments.

To date, I've not been part of a flame war online and I hope never to be. I've witnessed a few and don't wish to be involved. I like to leave conflict to my fictional characters. It's fun to read, even fun to create in a fictional setting, but I hate it in real life. How I became a customer service rep much less manager of a customer service department I'll never understand. It's a mystery as I run from conflict.

Perhaps admitting what I do in my day job is giving out too much information. However, I don't give out my employer's name or city, so hopefully, that protects my privacy while still sharing what makes me tick.

Some of the commenters on The Bumbles post about this topic are even leery of using Facebook. Again, as an author trying to get my name out to the reading public, I have accounts on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. Up to now, I've not had a problem except for finding time to visit all my accounts and still find time to write, blog, be a mom and wife, work a full time job... This week, I chose to write and thus I didn't blog as much. But what is a writer who doesn't write? That's food for another blog post.

As for lurking, I'll admit it. I lurk on some blogs. On some I comment a lot. Others I comment sometimes. It depends on whether I can leave a relevant, intelligent response. I don't want to leave an inane comment just to show my name. One of my favorite blogs to read is Copyblogger. It's intelligent and provides a lot of useful blogging and promotion advice. I'm a huge fan and read it daily. Yet I've never left a comment. Why? I'm afraid my addition to the conversation wouldn't be helfpful. Also, it's more like a magazine or newspaper than a friend.

What about you?

Do you lurk and if so, why? How much information do you share on your blog or in your emails with the online community?

If you're on Facebook, MySpace, or another social medium, do you post pictures of yourself and even your family?

Do you really want to post that picture/comment online?

Just last night I read an article warning people not to post damning pictures and comments on Twitter or anywhere else online. Our employers are becoming Internet savvy and checking the net for things people do and say. That includes current and potential employees, donors, friends... This seemed like good advice but I thought my ____ isn't very computer literate. It would be highly unlikely he'd find anything I posted online (not that I plan to say anything against my boss or employer - I think they're fantastic), even if I used my real name (which I don't). However, he surprised me today. He asked me to look at our company's Face Book page. He'd found several "friend" avatars he thought inappropriate for our type of company. He objected to them and linking the company website to them in case other donors think we condone that sort of thing. Now Face Book avatars are not too bad compared to Twitter's. I've seen completely naked people on Twitter avatars. There are tons of women in g-strings showing off their butts on their Twitter avatars. However, I agree with my boss. I don't think the company will stop using Face Book or other social media but I imagine they will monitor it a lot closer after this. I also think they'll take down the link. Here are a few I found that are pretty riske, more so than any my boss found. Believe me, I've seen much worse. For my website, this isn't a problem. However, for a lot of companies, it would be.

Do you really want your boss, your church, your co-workers to see things like this? I wouldn't dare post these under my real name. You'll also want to see what Amarinda Jones, Anika Hamilton, Anny Cook, Barbara Huffert, Brynn Paulin, Bronwyn Green, Dakota Rebel, Kelly Kirch, Molly Daniels, Sandra Cox, Regina Carlysle, and Cindy Spencer Pape are up to, so make sure to visit them also. :)

Schmoozing and Cruising

I just received word of my royalties for the month of April from one of my publishers and it wasn't good. I worked my butt off promoting in April and the royalties are the worst I've had from this publisher. I joined Twitter and Facebook. I gained more blog followers. I spent valuable writing time schmoozing and cruising on the web. I thought and hoped that might help sales. Maybe I haven't attracted enough people to my blog. Maybe I haven't mentioned my books or blog enough on Twitter and Facebook (because I didn't want to spam). I asked the question on Facebook last night, "How can I attract more people to my blog?" "Content" was the number one answer. "Contests" was another answer. So let me also ask here: "What do you enjoy reading on a reading/writing/book/sometimes family/mom blog?" Serious answers will be much appreciated. Would you like to see more author interviews? More contests? Reader interviews? Other industry professional interviews? Other things? If you're involved in the reading world (avid reader, reviewer, writer, editor, agent, publisher, bookseller) and would like me to interview you, please leave me a comment. I'd love to interview you. Also please leave a comment if you have another suggestion. Thanks in advance. Ashley

Pictures Tell A Thousand Words - So Do You Look At Twit Pics?

I'm a geek and probably a nerd. I get a kick out of Star Trek and being on the cutting edge of technology. I've been seduced by Twitter and Facebook to my woe, and to many of the Twitter apps. One of my favorite Twitter apps is Twitpic which I'm sure is short for "Twitter pictures". I blog to get to know and be known by my friends and readers, so why not take it one step further? I read that popular stars like Vin Diesel and Shaq are masters of staying in touch with their fans and friends. How? By staying real. So what is "staying real"? Or "transparent"? I understand this to mean by sharing their lives and their thoughts in fun, light-hearted ways such as taking pictures out and about town and giving the random intimate thought. It's not about shoving the next book or movie or game down someone's throat. It's cute to see Shaq licking a big ice cream cone. It's cool to see Vin's on-location shots from his pov, not the movie's. So, whether they know it or not, they've become my mentors. I learn from them as I enjoy their daily antecdotes. I never would have dreamed that Vin Diesel or Shaquille O'Neil would have been my teachers, but I'm flexible and they are, even if they don't know it. Thus I'm reading every article on Twitter and Facebook I can find (inbetween playing the totally addictive Farm Town game on Facebook) and learning. Before you write it off and say, Twitter's for nerds and geeks, read further. Not only have I programmed my phone to send pictures to Twitter AND Facebook from my phone so that I'm a mobile friend and promoter, but I'm learning how to use it for the advantage of my day job. It's a great customer service tool and since I'm the customer service manager, I see that businesses can't afford to ignore the public's voice which is loud and clear on Twitter. The accountant and analyst in me wonders, do many people click through to see my pictures on Twitpic via Twitter and Facebook? I hope so. I try to be entertaining and informative. How am I being informative? I report on movies - such as my tweet "Skeeball rules. Terminator doesn't." (with a pic of a skee ball being slam dunked. I suppose I should've said "Terminator drools" but I didn't think of that until after I pressed the send key. So I reported that I did NOT like the newest Terminator movie. Save your money and watch it when it comes out on TV in a year or two. Star Trek, however, rocks. I've seen it twice on the big screen and would love to see it at the IMAX. I highly recommend it and said so on Twitter and Facebook as well as here. But I can say it on Twitter (and Facebook) without aid of my computer so I'm not tied down and I don't have to wait until I get home from the day job and softball field late at night and often too tired to sign online. I hope you'll get a kick out of my daily observations complete with pics. If you're not on Twitter or Facebook or Twitpics, I highly recommend them. Not only are they great tools for making new friends and helping your business but they're great for reconnecting and staying connected to family and old friends. I'm a BIG fan. Maybe I've finally found the social media for which I've been searching. The Twitter Song

Are you a Tweeter? In other words, are you on Twitter? Just in case you're new to computerland, Twitter is one of many social networking communities. This one is all about "twittering" your thoughts, your every little movement (hopefully not going to the bathroom), and networking using about 200 characters or less at a time. Here's an amusing little ditty about the computer, the Internet, and in particular, about Twitter and Twittering. LOL - right? It's cute at any rate. Even the hubby laughed when I checked it out just now. I just found a cute Twitter widget as I was blog hopping. I found a new must-visit blog and this widget which you now see in my blog's sidebar. Maybe it will remind me to Twitter more than every 134 days (that's how many months? About 4?) I don't know that I have the hang of Twitter or even MySpace yet. I think I have a whole 2 friends on Facebook. I barely have time to visit Twitter which takes only a few seconds to make an entry. Do you think I really have time for MySpace AND Facebook? One of these days... That'll be the day I also sign up to host my own radio blog/talk show. I was really tempted a few minutes ago to sign up for my own blog show. It's free you know - well, if you don't count long distance phone charges weekly and if you don't count time as a cost. But then the reality of my free time set in before I hit the register button for my own show and I stopped. I bookmarked the page for later consideration. Until DD2 is out of high school and getting herself to all her softball games which keeps me out of the house almost every night of the week, plus several hours on weekends, I can't truly commit to anything else, particularly not when I have to be at the same bat place, same bat time week in, week out. Yeah, the promo would be awesome for me and for my friends and associates, but only if I can be guaranteed to be present. Someday... Meanwhile, I think I can carve out a few minutes a week to Twitter and hopefully even to be a guest on someone else's radio blog/talk show occasionally. Do you Twitter? How do you get the most out of it? Do you Twitter a lot or a little? Which is better if you have to devote your time to only one? Facebook or MySpace?
