Eye of the Beholder

Isn't it amazing how two or three people see exactly the same thing and get something totally different out of it?

Last week I joined Monday Minute Fiction. The leader posted a picture and our mission was to write a short story about it.

Last week she wrote about a shiek and I wrote about an erotic movie. This week she wrote about a ravenous vampire and I wrote a cougar (older woman-younger man)/reunion story.

This really makes me worry about the using eye-witness testimony in court. Just because someone saw something, did they see what was really happening? For God's sake Brynn saw vampires! I saw a fireman calendar model wanna-be.

I just joined a new blog (Lilah Pierce - author) and she has a writing challenge. She's challenged authors to pick one of four pictures, write a short story, and submit it to her. She'll post the stories once a month. Pretty cool. Click here to participate Lilah's writing challenge. Let Brynn Paulin know if you want to join in Monday Minute Fiction here.

Take A Break From Writing To Improve Your Stories

Often I hear writers bemoan the fact they don't have enough time to write, that they need more time. But because of other commitments - day jobs, spending time with family and friends, exercising, church, etc. - we can't spend as much time as we'd like writing. I'm one of the guiltiest. I admit it.

Yet, if we were to stay behind our computers all day, all night, day in, day out, we'd soon run out of things to write about. Our creativity would be in danger of drying up. We need to get out in the world to see what's going on, to be inspired by God's beautiful world with all its vibrant colors, scents, and sounds. We need to feel the squish of wet grass under our feet, the waxiness of a leaf between our fingers or the hard concrete underfoot that makes our feet ache to remember our heroes and heroines need to experience similar things to bring life to our stories.

This morning instead of writing while my daughter practiced soft ball, I exercised. I took a long walk in a neighborhood where I've never been. As usual, I had my cell phone with me, so I took several pictures that I also sent to Twitter. This will serve to remind me what I saw and to share the beautiful scenery with my friends, family, and followers.

Here's a picture of a beautiful butterfly that let me get close enough to take its picture. I've tried before to photograph butterflies but I've always scared them away before. This time, I got lucky.

I also saw several of these little lizards scuttling about. They had very curly tails and are four or five times the size of the geckos that live in my garden. So I was able to get close enough to this one to take its picture, too. Unfortunately, this particular one doesn't have as curvy a tail as its neighbors.

After my walk, when I was in my car trying to write, this little guy kept posing for me, so I had to take his picture, too.

I got a bit distracted taking pictures instead of plotting full-blown stories, but the details are just as important. I very well might add one of more of these characters to a story. Or I might mention how the lightning detector went off and five minutes later a rain so hard came we got wet even huddling under the pavillion. I'll remember how the temperature dropped from the sweltering magnitude that had made my cheeks hot and flushed, to a wonderful cool breeze that kissed them instead and how fresh and clean the air smelled after the shower.

Had I slept in late like I longed to do this morning, I'd have missed that butterfly. I'd have missed seeing these beautiful houses and grand Ft. Lauderdale canal. This isn't like the little, unassuming canal that runs behind my house. This is a huge canal that runs through the ritzy part of town where the home owners have their own docks and boats. The biggest boat was named "TomKat". I wonder if that's "TomKat" as in Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes... I can only speculate, but speculation often inspires new stories or takes them in different directions.

Another day when I took time to socialize with the other softball moms even though I was itching to write, one gave me the perfect idea for my book. It unblocked me. Had I forced myself to write, I'd have missed this great turn for the story.

Of course we writers must write and cannot always socialize or take a walk. But it's also good to leave our desks behind from time to time and experience the world and enjoy the people around us.

Do you really want to post that picture/comment online?

Just last night I read an article warning people not to post damning pictures and comments on Twitter or anywhere else online. Our employers are becoming Internet savvy and checking the net for things people do and say. That includes current and potential employees, donors, friends... This seemed like good advice but I thought my ____ isn't very computer literate. It would be highly unlikely he'd find anything I posted online (not that I plan to say anything against my boss or employer - I think they're fantastic), even if I used my real name (which I don't). However, he surprised me today. He asked me to look at our company's Face Book page. He'd found several "friend" avatars he thought inappropriate for our type of company. He objected to them and linking the company website to them in case other donors think we condone that sort of thing. Now Face Book avatars are not too bad compared to Twitter's. I've seen completely naked people on Twitter avatars. There are tons of women in g-strings showing off their butts on their Twitter avatars. However, I agree with my boss. I don't think the company will stop using Face Book or other social media but I imagine they will monitor it a lot closer after this. I also think they'll take down the link. Here are a few I found that are pretty riske, more so than any my boss found. Believe me, I've seen much worse. For my website, this isn't a problem. However, for a lot of companies, it would be.

Do you really want your boss, your church, your co-workers to see things like this? I wouldn't dare post these under my real name. Pictures Tell A Thousand Words - So Do You Look At Twit Pics?

I'm a geek and probably a nerd. I get a kick out of Star Trek and being on the cutting edge of technology. I've been seduced by Twitter and Facebook to my woe, and to many of the Twitter apps. One of my favorite Twitter apps is Twitpic which I'm sure is short for "Twitter pictures". I blog to get to know and be known by my friends and readers, so why not take it one step further? I read that popular stars like Vin Diesel and Shaq are masters of staying in touch with their fans and friends. How? By staying real. So what is "staying real"? Or "transparent"? I understand this to mean by sharing their lives and their thoughts in fun, light-hearted ways such as taking pictures out and about town and giving the random intimate thought. It's not about shoving the next book or movie or game down someone's throat. It's cute to see Shaq licking a big ice cream cone. It's cool to see Vin's on-location shots from his pov, not the movie's. So, whether they know it or not, they've become my mentors. I learn from them as I enjoy their daily antecdotes. I never would have dreamed that Vin Diesel or Shaquille O'Neil would have been my teachers, but I'm flexible and they are, even if they don't know it. Thus I'm reading every article on Twitter and Facebook I can find (inbetween playing the totally addictive Farm Town game on Facebook) and learning. Before you write it off and say, Twitter's for nerds and geeks, read further. Not only have I programmed my phone to send pictures to Twitter AND Facebook from my phone so that I'm a mobile friend and promoter, but I'm learning how to use it for the advantage of my day job. It's a great customer service tool and since I'm the customer service manager, I see that businesses can't afford to ignore the public's voice which is loud and clear on Twitter. The accountant and analyst in me wonders, do many people click through to see my pictures on Twitpic via Twitter and Facebook? I hope so. I try to be entertaining and informative. How am I being informative? I report on movies - such as my tweet "Skeeball rules. Terminator doesn't." (with a pic of a skee ball being slam dunked. I suppose I should've said "Terminator drools" but I didn't think of that until after I pressed the send key. So I reported that I did NOT like the newest Terminator movie. Save your money and watch it when it comes out on TV in a year or two. Star Trek, however, rocks. I've seen it twice on the big screen and would love to see it at the IMAX. I highly recommend it and said so on Twitter and Facebook as well as here. But I can say it on Twitter (and Facebook) without aid of my computer so I'm not tied down and I don't have to wait until I get home from the day job and softball field late at night and often too tired to sign online. I hope you'll get a kick out of my daily observations complete with pics. If you're not on Twitter or Facebook or Twitpics, I highly recommend them. Not only are they great tools for making new friends and helping your business but they're great for reconnecting and staying connected to family and old friends. I'm a BIG fan. Maybe I've finally found the social media for which I've been searching. Cincinnati pictures and Booksigning Today

View driving into downtown Cincinnati from the North going South,

The left side view from my Dad's front yard

This is a farm just down the road from my Dad's house in Greater Cincinnati.

This is my Dad's backyard.

This is me in Dad's house.

I'll post more Cincinnati pictures in a day or three. :)

Today again, I'll be at Lori Foster and Dianne Castell's Readers' 'N Writers' Get Together in Cincinnati. I'm blogging ahead of time as I fully expect to be too busy to get online today.

If you're in the Cincinnati area please pop in and meet me at the booksigning between 3 and 5 pm at the Cincinnati Marriott North which is located right off I-75 exzit 19 in the West Chester section of Greater Cincinnati. Or you can find it on Mulhauser Road.

Keep your fingers crossed for me during my agent and editor appointments. God, don't let me blow them. Let them like my stories and me.

Dad's asleep so let me sign off as he's sensitive to any noise in the house and he wants to get up and leave early tomorrow.

I don't know if I'll get to blog Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday as I'll be at my aunt and uncle's house. I'll try to blog ahead again, but if not, I'll try to be back on Tuesday.

Home Again

I'm home - home as in Cincinnati, the place where I grew up.

Not just the town, but the house, with my dad.

It's so good but so weird. I don't get home often, unfortunately.

Anyway, the area's built up a lot, and not in a really good way, also unfortunately. It looks haphazard and there's no great master plan for a beautiful city - well, not in the Colerain area. I've not seen the rest of town yet.

Everything looks smaller.

Dad's woods are mostly gone and it looks like a golf course - he did that. He was afraid trees would fall on the house plus he loves golf.

There's a lot more traffic out on Colerain Ave all the way down to Old Colerain.

Oh well... There's bound to be change in 30 years.

I found these pics on Dad's computer of my last vacation with him four years ago. How do you like our snowman? The facial features, of course, are Dad's golf balls. If you knew him, it'd make perfect sense. It was such a pathetic little snowman, but because it was the first time I'd played in the snow for about 15 years and because Dad helped me make him, it was my favorite snowman of all time.

I'm spoiled because my small town in Florida is planned and so it's been kept very pretty and it's won the governor's award for best city in Florida several times. However, the city can be a pain as they have so many regulations and code enforcements.

I'm enjoying being with dad and because I'm here primarily to be with him, let me not stay on the computer any longer.

I'll pop on and off a lot, don't fret. Maybe more, maybe less than usual when I'm slave to the day job. I'll play it by ear. His internet connection's much slower than mine.

Oh! I had to stop in and get REAL White Castles on the way to Dad's house. They're not that much different than the frozen ones in the store. Maybe I should've stopped at Frisch's for a Buddy Boy. What I really need to do now is to hop on Dad's treadmill.

I'm definitely psyched to go to Lori Foster's Readers N Writers' event next weekend. I also need to let the rest of the family know I'm here.

I finished the edit

This will be short and sweet tonight. I finished the edit that was due Wednesday (last week) and I turned it in tonight. I'm zonked and all written out for the day, but I feel good to have that done.

Daughter #2 took these pics earlier today on the way to Borders. Unfortunately her phone cam wouldn't zoom in closer. But you can still see the egret, right? I'll try to get more pics of and about town of our local Florida things to post.
